Why does it matter?
Your greatest assets are your people and the working environment they create together. They are also your biggest challenge. In a fast-paced world where agility, trust and teamwork are essential, the pressure to crack-on can make it hard to notice the cracks. Telltale signs include miscommunications, blame and defensiveness. Left unattended, these will compromise decisions, impact performance and erode trust.
What if you could press pause || and step back for a moment? Just as in some sports, taking a timeout allows you and your team to do that. It provides the space to take a breath and explore what is going on before agreeing to any adjustments and returning to work.
For small businesses and teams navigating growth, this simple yet powerful practice has the potential to ensure that your greatest assets are performing at their best.
What is it?
A Workplace Timeout is a structured two-hour session that enables teams to reflect and recalibrate as they navigate organisational challenges and the associated relational dynamics.
It is grounded in systemic theory and practice that is used in organisation development and family therapy. By viewing your whole team as a system where everyone is affecting everyone else, you can explore how any tensions strain relationships and impact your effectiveness.
It is grounded in systemic theory and practice that is used in organisation development and family therapy. By viewing your whole team as a system where everyone is affecting everyone else, you can explore how any tensions strain relationships and impact your effectiveness.
By creating a safe and engaging space that encourages openness without blame, people make sense of what is going on and develop a shared understanding of the dynamics. It leads to clarity, a renewed sense of purpose and motivation to improve how you work together.
How does it work?
Every session follows a practical six-step process scheduled monthly for up to six sessions. Each one allows you to better understand and integrate different perspectives by exploring how you relate to each other, especially when the stakes are high. By noticing the stories you tell and any differences with what is experienced, you will start to see patterns in how you communicate. By making sense of what is going on between you, new possibilities emerge for how you work together while also strengthening your resilience as a team.
What happens as a result?
Each timeout produces actionable steps for improving communication, building trust and taking collective responsibility for shared goals. The small acts you make with each other that hold you together. For example, it might be as simple as taking a 15-minute walk together before the weekly team meeting or as practical as creating a shared place to record and track actions.
Over time, these timeouts serve to strengthen your collective leadership and build your capacity to sustain a thriving workplace culture. Over time, your people and the working environment they create together become the competitive advantage that drives growth and does make the biggest difference.
