Jam Works started in 2005, although it took another 21 years to realise what we had created.
Back then, we were both interested in communication and the difference between knowing something and being able to make it meaningful to someone else. Simon came from engineering and the emerging mobile technology of that time. He had an instinct for turning complicated ideas into something people could actually understand. Jess was building a career around words, brands and the stories organisations tell about themselves.
We set up Jam Works and then, in many ways, headed off on our own pathways.
Jess went deeper into brand: positioning, tone of voice, storytelling and the craft of helping organisations sound more like themselves.
Simon became curious about what was happening underneath the words. Engineering led to systems thinking; systems thinking led to organisation development, coaching, learning and a fascination with the relationships and behaviours that make organisations work.
Over the years, we worked with very different organisations and challenges. Yet the same question kept appearing: does what an organisation says about itself match what it feels like to work with, or within, it?
That brought Jam Works back together.
Today, we work on two sides of the same challenge. Jess helps organisations define and express who they are. Simon helps them explore the systems, relationships and behaviours that bring that identity to life.
Brand from the outside in. Organisation from the inside out.
It just took us 21 years to join the dots.
